Mike Cohen - Big names dodge St. Laurent vote
So who will run in the soon-to-be-called byelections in St. Laurent to replace ousted councillors Irving Grundman and René Dussault? Word has it that potential big-name candidates for Mayor Gérald Tremblay’s Montreal Island Citizens Union (MICU) will sit this one out and wait for the city-wide election next November. “I have a feeling voters in St. Laurent will go for demerger supporters in this byelection to try and send a message,” says one potential candidate. “They’ll switch back to the MICU next November when it becomes a choice between Tremblay and Pierre Bourque.” Many are wondering whether former St. Laurent mayor Bernard Paquet will step out of retirement. Paquet is so furious with his demerger team’s narrow defeat that he has stopped talking to many of his longtime friends aligned with Tremblay. $"/> $"/>The Bachelorette: When producers from ABC’s The Bachelor held auditions in Burlington, Vt. recently, Journal de Montréal reporter Marie Plourde pulled off the ultimate undercover assignment. She so impressed officials that she was asked to be one of the final 25 contestants, beating out some 20,000 others for the honour. But Plourde was not able to take the final step. For one thing, she is happily married, which would immediately disqualify her. She was sent a 35-page form to fill out, containing highly personal questions and requested to be available for up to six weeks of taping in June and July. Unwilling to divorce her husband or sign the registration form which legally binds a contestant to pay $5 million U.S. plus the costs of a lawyer if she were to recount her experience, she declined the invitation. The show debuts tonight with two 40-year-old bachelors. $"/> $"/>Christensen’s Motor Running: She deserves more purple hearts than John Kerry...CJAD’s car care expert Lisa Christensen recently had to have her appendix out, but was on the air less than 48 hours later despite doctor’s suggestions. Now Lisa will go against her program director Rick Moffat’s orders and do a show on October, 16, her wedding day. She’ll do the show from her hair appointment just down the street, with her bridesmaids in attendance. $"/> $"/>Little Prose: N.D.G. native and longtime CBC favourite Andy Little will launch his new book Before Whispers Become Silence next Monday (7:30 p.m.) at the Gelber Conference Centre (1 Cummings Square). This is the dramatic account of Little’s search for the reasons behind his mother’s suicide. He would succeed Jacques Laurent. Bouchard is doing just fine since he left politics to join the top law firm of Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg… The award for “Disgrace of the Year” goes to the organizers of the Festival de la Musique which started some five hours late Saturday at N.D.G. Park. It seems they forgot to set up a stage and a sound system. Pity some of the poor kids who rehearsed for three weeks and showed up 60 minutes early for their noon performance, only to be sent home after hours of delays …Local baseball personality Johnny Elias has scored a small part in the motion picture The Greatest Game Ever Played at the Kahnawake Golf Course, where he is a longstanding member. Elias plays a field marshall… $"/> $"/>Item of interest? e-mail mcohen@thesuburban.com, call 484-1107, ext. 307 or fax 483-7213.
